NOW STREAMING

You can now watch, gift, or organize a screening of ‘Dark and Tender’ and its sequel ‘Dark and Tender: The Big Island’.

These short and powerful documentaries follow the Chronically UnderTouched (CUT) Project as they shake off violent narratives of Black masculinity and seek to restore the vital aspects of touch and connection.

Aaron Johnson’s powerful short film follows ten Black men on a transformative retreat with the CUT Project outside Seattle, Washington. The men seek to reclaim platonic intimacy through encounters with nature and depictions of gentle Black masculinity.

In the second chapter of ‘Dark and Tender’, the CUT Project journies to Hawaii to workshop their practices. Part cinéma vérité, part elucidated teaching, the film slows down with the men as they reclaim and rebuild platonic intimacy and trust.

  • "It was truly an honor to hold your work in our community. Watching "Dark and Tender" in a space filled with students, educators, and community members–across generations–was incredibly powerful. You could feel people leaning in, reflecting, and opening up in ways that don’t always happen in school spaces. The conversations that followed were honest, vulnerable, and deeply meaningful. Your work, your presence, your care, and the power of your films made that possible."

Matthew Oakland, Dean of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, Lick Wilmerding High School

  • "Your work is so needed. The way you center tenderness, platonic touch, and more expansive, human ways of being–especially for Black/BIPOC men–is something that truly resonates, and honestly feels urgent in this moment."
